Why Your Internet Feels Slower in the Evening (and What You Can Do About It)

It is a familiar complaint: the connection is perfectly fine during the day, then around the time everyone gets home, video starts buffering and pages hang. Before you blame your provider or your router, it helps to know that evening slowdowns usually come from a handful of specific causes — and most of them are easy to identify.

Why evenings are different

In the evening your household is at its busiest. Phones, TVs, laptops, game consoles and smart devices are all active at once, and many of them are doing heavy things: streaming in HD, downloading game updates, backing up photos, or running video calls. A package that feels huge at 11am can feel tight when six devices are competing for it at 8pm.

The most common culprits

  • Too many devices on one WiFi band. Crowded 2.4GHz WiFi, especially in apartment buildings where dozens of neighbours’ networks overlap, gets noisy in the evening when everyone is online.
  • Background updates. Phones, consoles and PCs often download large updates overnight or in the evening without asking, quietly eating bandwidth.
  • Cloud backups and uploads. Photo and file backups use your upload speed, and a saturated upload can make everything else feel slow, even downloads.
  • An overworked router. Older or very cheap routers can struggle when many devices are active, and they often just need a restart or replacement.
  • Network congestion beyond your home. Sometimes the slowdown is outside your control, on the provider’s side or further upstream. This is the least common cause in a well-run network, but it does happen.

A simple way to find out which one it is

Run a speed test at a quiet time of day, then again at the slow time. Do it from a laptop connected by cable if you can, then from WiFi. If the cable result is fine but WiFi is slow, the problem is inside your home. If both are slow at the same time every evening, note the times and the results — that is exactly the information your provider needs to investigate properly.

Fixes worth trying

  • Move streaming TVs and desktop PCs to a cable where possible, which frees up WiFi for phones and laptops.
  • Use the 5GHz band for devices close to the router, since it is usually less crowded.
  • Schedule big downloads, updates and backups for late at night or early morning.
  • Restart the router now and then, and keep it in an open, central spot rather than inside a cabinet.
  • If you have many devices or a large home, consider a mesh system or an extra access point.
  • Check that your package matches how many people and screens you actually have.
